Intel and Alibaba teaming to develop Smart Athlete Tracking Technology for 2020 Olympics

Intel and Alibaba have announced a partnership on developing artificial intelligence (AI) technology at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show. It will leverage both of the companies’ resources and is primarily aimed at the next Olympics Games that is to be held in Tokyo in 2020.

Intel’s new 3D Athlete tracking technology is hosted on Alibaba’s cloud infrastructure and uses AI to analyze videos of athletes to improve and assist in their training. It will also enable to enhance the audience experience during the competition. The partnership aims to provide athletes with new training data and analysis and created new viewing experiences for fans around the world.

The new technology employs a wide range of modules such as computer vision and deep learning to essentially form 3D models of athletes. That will allow coaches and trainers to extract real-time insights and biomechanical data to understand which areas need improvements and analyze their performance. Coaches and trainers will be able to use AI and a digital model of the action to help athletes modify and enhance their training to improve their performance ultimately.

We are pleased to collaborate with Intel on the first-ever AI-powered 3D athlete tracking technology where Alibaba is proud to contribute its best-in-class cloud computing capability and algorithmic design – Chris Tung, CMO, Alibaba Group.

The company also claims that this AI technology has incredible potential as an athlete training tool for the way fans experience the Games and reexamining highlights during instant replays to give fans insights into how the athletes perform.

This collaboration between the companies is part of 10 years of commitment to the Olympic Games.
