Samsung and Harman showcases the next version of Digital Cockpit at CES 2019

CES has kicked off with the showcasing of a number of mindboggling innovations, the latest among which is the next level of Samsung and Harman’s joint project, the Digital Cockpit platform. The Digital Cockpit utilizes a suite of IoT solutions to provide an automotive experience replete with features like personalization, connectivity, and safety.

The updated version of the Digital Cockpit has seamlessly linked devices, vehicles, and homes to cater to the concerns of drivers and their passengers alike.

The Samsung Digital Cockpit now presents six displays, exactly double the number of its initial arrangement of three displays; with a new Independent Passenger Display and two Rear Seat Displays, ensuring personalized passenger entertainment irrespective of their given position in the vehicle. It has further been equipped with Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and Occupant Monitoring System (OMS) to smartly deduce the needs of the drivers and passengers alike, for personalized adjustment of their environment, including their screen settings and seat position.

Samsung Digital Cockpit has been fitted with two knobs in the front and two at the back of the car, which provide intuitive setting controls. The knobs feature a circular UX which can be customized to configure settings most frequently used by the driver and passengers to enhance a personalized experience.

Coming to an elaboration on the screens, the three screens in the anterior of the Digital Cockpit is meant for the driver, and provides important information and settings related to driving. The Cluster Display in front of the driver, for its part, caters to information like speed and oil gauge and has a layout customizable according to the driver’s preference.

The Centre Information Display locates itself between the driver and the front passenger, and showcases Bixby and SmartThings services for cars, besides apps like navigation and music. The Control Display is below this and controls air conditioning and sound volume, setting the functions on the knobs of the Digital Cockpit, etc. Passengers can also connect their smartphones to their display using In-vehicle Samsung DeX and use the display to attend to documents and emails on the move.

Bixby, an intuitive and conversational AI platform, for its part, provides features like giving drivers and passengers a hands-free control over their third-party apps and automotive-optimized functions while in the vehicle. Users can now also utilize SmartThings and Galaxy Home to check their vehicle status and controls without having to leave their home. This includes checking fuel levels, start up the engine, and cool down or warm up the inside temperature by turning on the AC even before one physically steps into the car.

So far as safety is concerned, the Samsung Digital Cockpit has been equipped with features like Samsung Electronics’ Exynos semiconductor, the Mirror Replacement Vision System, Front Facing Camera, and Driver Monitoring System to ensure a safe driving experience. The Mirror Replacement Vision System has been repositioned to the front left and right sides of the vehicle, the places where users look when changing lanes, and it has been equipped with the ability to identify moving objects to The Front Facing Camera analyses the conditions of the roads ahead to provide drivers with all the information about road conditions before they decide to make any sudden movement on intersections or change lanes.

The camera identifies vehicles, pedestrians, lanes, and traffic signs to make the driver wary of any danger that may befall him in case of a sudden movement; the data regarding which is simultaneously displayed on the Cluster Display. And the Driver Monitoring System has been put in place to sound an alarm in case of danger during a moment of careless driving on the part of the driver, including using the phone or feeling drowsy.
